When one gazes about the majesty that is the cisterns of Constantinople, one can only imagine the work that was put into the construction of such marvelous buildings. So much care was made to create something so beautiful for something so utilitarian in its purpose. I think that is one of the reasons that I care about Byzantine history. There is something really beautiful and exciting about it. It allows for us to have portal onto something that is truly missing in our modern societies today.
I often wonder about the path of modern societies today and I believe that the caring about history, through its many warts and glories, is the only way to truly understand our ancestors and continue to build our cultures. Too often people are dissmissive or too uninterested in the past. I seek to challenge that through this journal and I continue to be interested in the goal of spreading knowledge about the Byzantine Empire to whoever is willing to listen.
I think that spreading knowledge is its own reward and I think people need to respect that more.
