The thing with the Internet is that there are no gatekeepers on the public sites. While one may have a job at a newspaper which has an online section and can only write what the editor wants, there is no editor on a blog or video sites. The most relevant aspects in this blog post is the video medium and what videos should be made in order to spread knowledge of Byzantine History and concepts.
What Videos that still need to be made?
Byzantine Tales by Chrysa Sakel and Spyros Theocharis is clear example of how Byzantine History is moving out of the realm of being solely academic. It is also not luxury like in travelogues in old newsreels from the 1960s talking about Turkish Istanbul or other places in the Turkish Republic. While they are not making videos as their main source of content, they are an example of how Greeks are navigating the Byzantine history in their own country. Their comics are bringing to life a culture that has largely be superseded by Classical Antiquity. Such websites are important to get an equilibrium between Classical Antiquity and the Byzantine Empire in the Middle Ages and its interactions with Catholics.
Byzantine Videos about the Macedonian Era
The Macedonian Era is sometimes eclipsed by the reign of the Kommenian Emperors simply because that era takes place during the time of the Crusades. One has to understand the importance of figures such as King Baldwin and Saladin. However, the Macedonian era needs more attention than what is has right now in this era.
Videos on Emperor Constantine IX
His reign is very interesting as three women, Zoe, Theodora and Maria Skleraina were ruling the empire with him at that time.
Maria Skleraina wasn’t really enacting policy but it was quite odd you had three women who had lots of influence in the empire. His rule having three women in a state of influence is quite an intriguing story for a society which was highly patriarchal even with its Christian ethics.
Videos on Byzantine Culture and Customs
Ancient Roman Culture tends to be covered in greater amounts in comparison to the Byzantine culture.
We need to have more focus on the truly unique aspects of Christian culture in the Byzantine Empire. While it may not have the appeal of say gladiatorial games, it gives a perspective on how the Roman culture went from a polytheistic culture to one that was monotheistic.
Videos on Byzantine Video Games
This is another issue which I do not see much of on the internet. I have been writing about what a video game set in the Byzantine Empire would look like and appear to gamers.
The Byzantines and the Crusades
While Real Crusades History has talked about the Crusades for many years, the channel isn’t talking about the events from the perspective of the Byzantines.
Videos on Byzantine Chariot Racing
Talking about Byzantine Chariot Racing would be a nice addition to the catalog of videos on the empire here.
