Top Byzantine History Websites On the Internet

Byzantinists are becoming more known across the internet and academia in recent years. Here are some sites that talk about Byzantine history and which I recommend as contributing to understanding this topic.

Byzantine Tales: https://www.byzantinetales.com/

Byzantine Tales is by far one of my favorite sites on the Byzantine Empire. The two artists at this site, Chrysa Sakel and Spyros Theocharis are Greeks who have brought Byzantine as well as Greek History into the realm of Digital Artistry. They have brought to life many important men and women of the Byzantine Empire, especially the Middle Macedonian era. Their art is mostly in the realm of comic art but it is great way to capturing color and motion in that era. Instead of your traditional illustrations, they give you a narrative in the style of comics and it is a treasure. I highly recommend going to this site and supporting their art.

Byzantine Military: https://byzantinemilitary.blogspot.com/

This guy is a true treasure in the internet community of Byzantinists. His blog is on Blogger and is rather simplistic in its aesthetics, but it is a site that is devoted to the art of long form writing. Many of his articles are excellent and provide great insights into Byzantine history and culture. He also provides images of reenactments, which is always a treat when talking about late Roman history.

Emperors of Byzantium/Byzantine Chronicle: Byzantine Chronicle-Xronikon

This is a Greek site run by Manolis Papathanassiou, who is web designer. His site is more about the emperors than about the sociology or pop culture about the Byzantines. It is very much a website in the classic mode, which means it is less about speculation or discussion of topics which are not related to history. His site is straight forward and clean and concise.

The Byzantine Legacy

A website that is run by David Hendrix. It incorporates Google Maps to showcase the location of historical Byzantine sites relevant to the content on the website.

İSTANBUL TARİHİ(In Turkish)

This is Turkish website that mainly focuses on the Ottoman Period, but there are many nice articles that write about the Byzantine era also. Sites such as these are a reminder that history isn’t written just in English. There is more in it than meets the eye. The Turkish academic community tends to be very much underrepresented in search results. These articles put Constantinople in context with the Ottoman Conquest by Mehmed II which is often overlooked by many historians.
