In historical research, most books on the Byzantines were generally made only for academics. However, in recent years, there is more of an emphasis on trying to communicate to the average citizen about the Byzantine Empire.
Here two favorite books on the Byzantine Empire both, eBooks and in print. As of right now, I have other books in my collection but I honestly believe that these two books are the best for understanding the economy as well as the history of the Middle Byzantine era.
- The Byzantine Economy” by Angeliki E. Laiou and Cécile Morrisson
- Streams of Gold, Rivers of Blood by Anthony Kaldellis
The Byzantine Economy is probably the most important of the boring books on here. It provides important insights into the change and continuity of the Byzantine economy during its millennia long rule in Greece and Asia Minor.
Streams of Gold, Rivers of Blood by Anthony Kaldellis is one of most important recent classics of Byzantine Historiography that I have seen. He has also released The New Roman Empire in the previous year.
