This is a concise explanation of my blog post: Who was the Greatest Byzantine Emperor?
Best Byzantine Emperors:
- Basil II: An effective and populist ruler who managed to bring the Eastern Roman Empire to its greatest extent since the time of Heraclius.
- Anastasius: A bureaucrat who actually worked to stablize the empire and knew how to keep his own religious views in check for greater stability among his citizens.
- Justinian: A man who was a 6th Century Basil II and brought more energy to a European-based empire that would not be seen on a sustainable scale until Napoleon.
- Heraclius: An Emperor who could have been another Justinian but he was unable to maintain his successful reconquests due to the Muslim invasions.
- Alexios Kommenos: Responsible for giving the Byzantines another couple centuries of survival with diplomacy and reforms on the scale of Heraclius’s successors.
